Standing Up for Homelessness

Last weekend I did a Comedy Stand Up. The event was for the local Maidstone Charity called Making a Difference for Maidstone (MADM).

It’s a Christian charity but I don’t think that religion comes into it. It’s certainly not a prerequisite to getting support from them, and there’s no evangelistic theme. It’s just that, sadly and in this increasingly difficult economic climate, more people need help. It’s a cause that our group has helped before and I’m sure we’ll do it again.

MADM supports those who suffer from homelessness, domestic abuse, addiction, financial need, unemployment, relationship breakdown and more. If you fancy making a donation, they would be very grateful.

Me, well, I agreed to do a stand up.

Not just do it, but write it as well.

After all the years that I have stood up in front of people when I was working, this was the toughest work of all. I wrote the script, then rewrote it, then edited it. And then delivered it to a (mainly, I hope) sympathetic audience, as part of an evening of variety.

I won’t share the content, it’s probably not as good/bad/funny/ unfunny in print as in real life. Even the nun in the confessional joke.

But I’ll share a photo. One must get dressed for the occasion, don’t you know? One biproduct of the event has been my recognition of how tough it is to be a stand-up. Don’t we often take different professions for granted, and isn’t stand-up comedy just another of them?

Me, well I suppose it was a bit of a bucket list thing as well, and probably never again – but all in a good cause.
