I was also a little surprised but assume that it is related in some way to my thoughts in my more recent book on the Future of the Public Sector which deals, in part, with the future of education.
The recognition stimulated a lively conversation at home. How can this be when I am not a qualified teacher or lecturer – at least not qualified in ‘education’? I tried to explain that teaching doesn’t only happen in the classroom but in the workplace, at home, in a book, in a webinar or in a blog.
As the years have passed, I’ve increasingly appreciated the importance of the teaching profession and the role that many of them take in providing personal leadership to students. Teachers are leaders.
As a profession it will be interesting to see how the teaching profession changes with the progress of technology, both in terms of the teaching process and also how teachers prepare their students for an unprecedented future workplace.
Beyond the classroom, leaders are also teachers. Nowadays the role of the leader is not only to set the direction of travel and create the vision, but also to explain why this is being done. Effective communication is a key leadership competence.
Teachers are leaders. And leaders are teachers.
The question really is why do I want to ‘teach’? You could ask the same question about why I want to write.
I put it down to a desire to share my knowledge and experience, but perhaps more fundamental than that, its also because I care about what’s happening.
Aren’t we entering a transformative time in history? Isn’t knowledge exchange (aka teaching) a critical part of the development of mankind?
