I was pleased last week ro make a presentation to the local branch of the U3A – ‘University of the Third Age’ – about AI. The subtitle was ‘The Revolution of Our Time’.
In my presentation I tried to draw comparisons between current times and previous industrial revolutions. It was an idea that I’d used before when in Bradford, one of the hearts of the last Industrial Revolution, but I was even more mindful of the link following a vacation in Cornwall which was the heart of the tin and copper industries. Cornwall was once described as the most valuable place in the western world.
U3A represents those in the final third of their lives. They were receptive and appreciative – but the reason that they are great and tough (in equal measures) is that they are not only experienced and won’t tolerate any wool being pulled over their eyes – but also that they are a healthily sceptical. I think of it as a bit like doing a presentation to the Elders of the Village.
Because of their response and their questions, I can’t help but think of things in a different and more insightful light.
They insisted on paying me a speakers fee – which I was happy to pass on the Pancreatic Cancer charity.
