I’m delighted to have been asked to contribute a chapter towards a new book to be published in 2026, about the future of banking. I suppose its some sort of sequel to my own book on the topic which was published some years ago and is still selling well.
To be honest, I’m happy that it’s only a chapter as I seem to have so many other plates spinning at the moment, and frankly I’m a little tired as a result of the effects of a busy summer. Maybe I’ll perk up a little when the weather cools down.
The challenge of a book published next year is that it needs to have at least 5 years of longevity to be commercially viable. Thinking about the speed of change at the moment, especially in the AI space, who can be really confident of how things will look like going into early 2030’s and beyond? Turning it around, how was banking in 2015? Has it really moved on a great deal over the decade? Isn’t one of the problems that we are great at ‘talking the talk’ but not always so good at ‘walking the walk’?
There’s a real risk too that I consider the issue from a Western lens, but isn’t the reality that enormous progress is being made in other continents? What do I need to do personally to ensure that their perspective is fully catered for? I think I’d love to be a fly on the wall at a conference on banking in Ghana, for example.
So, I need to take off my banking hat, and my analytics and AI hats, and yet again become the ‘futurist’. Wish me luck !
